The Five Minute Interview with Sam Kirtikar, managing director, Clever Lending

Sam KirtikarClever Lending are a second charge master broker focused on making secured loans more accessible to you and your clients. One of their most important objectives is to ensure they work closely with you and support you in providing compliant secured loans to suit a range of client needs.

We speak to managing director, Sam Kirtikar:

What is the best thing about being in the secured loan business?

This a very exciting time for the secured loans industry and it’s been very gratifying how the industry is working together. The second charge market has changed fairly dramatically in recent years and the lessons learned are crucial in moving forward in the build up to and beyond the new regulation in March 2016. Master brokers, introducers and lenders all have an important role to play in shaping the way key messages, awareness and education are distributed to the market and one of the best things I’ve experienced recently is the collaborative way so many parts of the industry have started to contribute and work together. There is still a long way to go, but so far the response has been excellent and the key messages are starting to get out there.

What keeps you focussed?

Firstly and foremost we must ensure that the lessons the industry has learned in previous years, remain at the forefront of our minds. Secondly, at Clever Lending, we are focussed on continually building the current relationships we have and developing new, long term ones, particularly at this important time for the industry. We are trusted by our brokers and lender partners and these relationships will play a key part of our strategy of delivering the necessary information for brokers to fully understand the new regulation and allow them to capitalise on every opportunity with their clients. Thirdly, it’s important that we’re focussed on developing technology to deliver secured loan products alongside mortgages so the broker and the client have a direct comparison and a ‘one stop shop’ at the front end and access to master brokers who have the products and packaging facilities that we offer.

What qualities do you look for in your employees or colleagues?

The key characteristics I look for are reliability, initiative and integrity so they can drive forward in a dependable and trusted manner. These are three characteristics that I want the company to portray so it is just as important that the people within it are of a similar ilk.

Are you an optimist or a pessimist?

Is it pessimistic to say, I am a realist?

What did you want to be as a child?

As a child I always wanted to own Brazil. Not sure why, but that is what my answer used to be when the question was put to me…

What will be the greatest challenge facing the secured loan industry in the coming months?

We relish a good challenge and the greatest thing we plan to do is communicate with the industry on all aspects of the new regulation to ensure brokers fully understand what they entail and the consequences of them. But also, I think it’s important to explain the real benefits of secured loans and where a loan may be a better option than a mortgage. There are many situations where a secured loan is a viable alternative and raising the awareness of loans is also part of what we’ll be doing. We’ll do this by supporting brokers with the four pillars of our offering: Products, Service, Education and Regulation. Everything will be done to bring the industry together to get brokers through the regulatory changes and make the process of change as easy as possible for them.

Who or what makes you laugh?

Lots of things make me laugh, I am quite easily entertained. Though generally speaking it is the short basic one-liners I find the funniest. I have a welsh friend called Huw who knows them all.

Do you dread Monday mornings?

No not in the slightest. It is a very exciting time for Clever Lending and me personally. I look forward to the week ahead and getting people to join us on our journey. Though this doesn’t mean I don’t look forward to Fridays.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

Probably how fast I talk… No matter how hard I try, I can’t seem to slow it down. I previously worked in Law and speaking in a clear and concise manner was imperative; something I always struggled with. I think I am getting control of it now.

With whom would you most like to have dinner?

Napoleon – the ultimate leader of men.
