We speak to Head of Business Development, Katherine Simmons:


What is the best thing about being in the secured loan business?

Being in the secured loan business is very exciting place to be for a BDM. I get to educate Brokers about an industry that wants to lend. From a sales perspective, being able to give a good news story in a market that has struggled is great.

What keeps you focussed?

I have always been very focused. My job is relationship building and creating trust with my introducers, this is the only way in my opinion to gain the business. This requires a lot of planning, being proactive and reactive to enquiries.

What qualities do you look for in your employees or colleagues?

An open and honest approach to both colleagues and introducers. I have a lot of brokers that I have introduced to the business, therefore need to trust that my colleagues deal with them in the same way as I do.

Are you an optimist or a pessimist?

I would say an optimist. In sales you have to be positive, otherwise it shows. I have faith in secured loans and the business so I have to make that clear when presenting our proposition to brokers.

What did you want to be as a child?

It sounds quite sad really, but I always wanted to work in finance. It’s probably because I love money really!!!

What will be the greatest challenge facing the secured loan industry in the coming months?

Demand for loans. With the message about secured loans getting out to brokers and the realisation by them that there is an alternative to a remortgage if they can’t place their client with the high street, service could become an issue if the lenders don’t make sure their processes are robust.

Who or what makes you laugh?

My boss Amy Smith – Any one that knows her will know what I mean!!!

Do you dread Monday mornings?

No, I never have. I love the job I do and am very passionate about it. I have been a BDM for nearly 10 years in the mortgage market. Truthfully I am a workaholic!

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I wish I could switch off sometimes.

With whom would you most like to have dinner?

Boris Johnson – Now that would be interesting!
