We welcome director Scott Thorpe to explain his new venture:
Firstly, thank you for having me back. I recently became co-owner of Access 4 Finance who are a nationwide Specialist Broker with offices throughout the UK. We aim to bring transparency back to the market place as well as providing intermediaries and consumers with a complete financial solution from Bridging Finance and Secured Loans to Pension Reviews and Life Insurance.
What is the best thing about owning your own Nationwide Brokerage?
I get to call the shots! Any idea I have however off the wall, its more than likely we will do it, for example I don’t think any introducer has ever seen a full breakdown of the costs that get deducted from their commission – our policy is 100% Transparency so the introducer will get to see the actual costs for the valuations and buildings society questionnaires on the commission statement.
I have a few more surprises, and we are in advance talks with a few people about bringing something amazing and unique to the market place. I am really excited about this and as soon as we agree how the logistics will work we will let you know but believe me everyone involved in this unique project is also very excited. It will also be another chance for us to prove why we are the market leader in transparency, integrity and customer service.
And the worst?
The hours! It’s no longer a 9-7 job it’s a 24/7 job. Even when I have left the office the phone is diverted to my own mobile and I also have access to all my emails via my phone.
What is the best thing about being in the secured loan industry?
Completing a difficult deal for the broker when they have gone round the houses and were about to throw the enquiry in the bin. There is no better feeling than finding the “unplaceable deal” and even more satisfying is calling the broker to let them know the application has completed and earned £1000’s for that five minute phone call.
What keeps you focussed?
Well I feel I should be honest. One is money and the other is to become the number one place for introducers to come to, thankfully they both work hand in hand. Providing the broker’s with the best service along with being transparent means the more money we earn and the more respected we become.
What qualities do you look for in your employees or colleagues?
Ambition. I would love one day to employ someone who then 3-4 years down the line goes off and sets up on their own and makes a success. Nothing would give me a greater satisfaction, unless they took all my business with them! I am also looking for someone who is motivated and has the same values as me. To provide the best service we can and to be the best in what we do.
Are you an optimist or a pessimist?
What will be the greatest challenge facing the Secured Loan industry in the coming months?
I think the industry is in a great place at the moment we are seeing new lenders and new improved criteria’s coming out on a weekly basis. The major challenge as always is to promote secured loans as a real alternative to a remortgage. To show the mortgage brokers the benefits of the products. I believe my company is taking the first steps on a long road by making things transparent and we hope others follow suit to start getting brokers using Secured Loans again.
Do you dread Monday mornings?
Not anymore the 10 minute journey to work is fantastic with no traffic.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Be able to hold back and think before I speak.
With whom would you most like to have dinner?
The underwriter who is processing my application to completion the next day.
